By Brevet Brigadier General Seth Eastman (1808 - 1875) is unanimously regarded as one of the
foremost recorders of Indian life. A number of his works are on display at the U.S. Capitol.
In 1847 he was appointed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to illustrate Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's
"Indian Tribes of the United States 1851 - 1857."
This monumental six-volume set was selected by the OSU Library for its two-millionth volume in
1999. Both sets of books were printed by the Government Printing Office and are part of the OSU
Library's Government Documents collection.
